OSCARS: What Will the Best-Supporting-Actress Nominees Wear on Oscar Night?

March 6th, 2010 · No Comments · Celeb's/Gossip

Your guess is as good as ours, but here are some dresses we’d like to see the best-supporting-ctress nominees wear. A word of advice for the night’s leading ladies: forget practicing your speech—we really just care that you know how to work your couture for the cameras! After all, you may be deprived of a little gold man, but being on a worst-dressed list could sting even more.

Nominated for her turn in Nine, Penélope Cruz worn completely black ensembles on several occasions recently, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish bombshell continues the winning formula at this year’s Academy Awards. And since Cruz is also not one to shy away from showing off her curves, we recommend this elegant, close-fitting Oscar de la Renta dress.

While some actresses are scared off by big, bold gowns (and often for good reason), Vera Farmiga has both the moxy and the body for the look, evidenced recently by her black floor-length dress at the Golden Globes and her voluminous Marchesa choice for the BAFTA awards. We think this billowing Jason Wu number with a golden all-over print would suit the Up in the Air actress well.

Maggie Gyllenhaal tends to be a fashion chameleon, so pinpointing her style is tricky. But we’ve noticed a growing pattern on the red carpet —the Crazy Heart nominee has been rocking formfitting dresses, such as a mermaid-cut RM by Roland Mouret dress for year’s Golden Globes— and she always looks polished. For Oscar night, we imagine her in this Armani Privé stunner; it’s practically the quintessence of Hollywood glamour.

Anna Kendrick, 24, is a newcomer to the scene, but she’s already mastered the art of dressing for the red carpet. Having appeared recently in girly, one-shoulder numbers, the Up in the Air nominee would look great in this youthful but sophisticated Elie Saab gown.

A bold woman needs a bold dress, and we think Precious nominee Mo’Nique could really work this daring Givenchy couture gown. She had success with a strapless burnished-gold Reem Acra number at this year’s Golden Globes, and it would be great to see her in similarly cut dress, but one with a dose of color. The design of our Givenchy pick would flatter her voluptuous figure—the dress is fitted only through the rib cage—and it would let her show a little bit of leg—which she seems to be doing anyway since sparking the whole shave-or-not-to-shave controversy.
