DEBUT COLLECTION: Jimmy Choo for Men

“I am thrilled to introduce men’s shoes to the Jimmy Choo world. My vision of the Jimmy Choo man is one who exudes confidence and style whether he is an artist or an investment banker. The first thing I look at on a man is his shoes”, commented Tamara Mellon, OBE, founder and chief creative officer, Jimmy Choo.

Fusing modern British style with luxurious Italian craftsmanship, the debut men’s collection has a mod aesthetic with a hint of 1960s Mayfair playboy. A perfect balance between classic and rock’n’roll, the men’s collection is focused but versatile, with a wide range of styles including lace-ups, monk straps, loafers, side-zip boots and even evening slippers. Rugged, masculine boots such as Chelsea boots and bikers are also on offer. Sneakers are detailed in luxurious fabrics such as grey flannel and suede.

MR PORTER, the online retail destination for men’s style, will be launching the first men’s footwear collection from Jimmy Choo this July.

The MR PORTER offering will include exclusive brown suede Oxfords – a modern interpretation of the four-hole Oxford lace-ups – loafers, minimal and modern monk-strap boots, practical, all-English Chelsea boots, and discrete sneakers in grey flannel, luxuriously lined in shearling.

“We are delighted to have the debut Jimmy Choo men’s collection on MR PORTER. Tamara Mellon’s vision for a stylish and confident man fits perfectly with our vision of becoming the global online style destination for men”, said Toby Bateman, buying director, MR PORTER.

This new arrival to MR PORTER continues to celebrate the site’s unique proposition of combining editorial content and the best in international menswear. The site showcases a well-edited selection of merchandise from 80 leading international designers, with new names and additional product being added every week. Other footwear designers include John Lobb, Gucci, J.Crew and Yves Saint Laurent.

59 BOND ST: Italian Men Footwear Brand

59 BOND ST is an artisanal lab for handmade men shoes, as they like to say about themselves. It seems like time has stopped at 59 BOND ST – artisans are doing the same manual production with the original passion as on the first day, back in early 1959.

Despite of their name, 59 BOND ST comes from Italy, a country famous by skilled handicraftsmen, quality materials, creativity, style and great design.

World’s cosmopolitan cities are 59 BOND ST’s source of inspiration. Their styles are the perfect partner for every occasion and any time of the day which is expressed by the line names: ‘20 4 7’ and ‘9 to 5’, ‘Casual Friday’, ‘Never Sleeps’ and the new one ‘Hybrid’.

59 BOND ST men shoes are a symbol of absolute quality, advanced research and good taste for mixing fine and uncommon (vegetable tanned) leathers or natural raw materials, using innovative manufacturing solutions in achieving maximum comfort and protection of the environment.

59 BOND ST represents the ideal balance between creativity, experience and attention to detail. The result is a unique, incomparable, versatile shoe, akin to the man that chooses it. The 59 BOND ST man pursues beauty, discreet and sophisticated luxury with an uncommon and unostentatious personal style.

59 BOND ST introduces itself with four iconic masterpieces:

GORDON: ‘20 4 7’ Line – a timeless must-have style, in special vegetable tanned leather

PANAMA: ‘Casual Friday Line’ – a casual contemporary version of the classic lace up Derby style

HYBRID: Sneaker’s capsule with stylish lines, matching a casual concept. Looks great with jeans, but with slacks for a black tie event as well.

Completely handmade in Italy with silk lining, natural rubber sole, vegetable tanned leather and cashmere suede, 59 BOND ST has an Italian soul and a cosmopolitan mind. It is always on the move with unstoppable energy, extraordinary looking and passionate.

59 BOND ST is finalizing an agreement with Galeries LaFayette in Dubai and the collection is expected to hit the store in September 2011.

COLORFUL: T & F SLACK Shoemakers London

Tim and Fiona Slack (T&F Slack) are married to each other and to their love of creating shoes, considered “modern classics” by industry standards. Their collection gives the classic “Gibson” or “Derby” shoe shape new life when unexpected color combinations, stitching details and fabrications are blended together.

You can choose from the perforated Punch Derby in white leather with yellow peaking beneath, or have a custom pair made to order in their Notting Hill Shop, or use the simple “build your own shoe” system they’ve created within Selfridges and Liberty.

Dedicated to keeping manufacturing local, they make around 150 shoes per month in their factory where old-fashioned machinery is salvaged and customized to create their “modern classic” shoes. With so much repetition in the world of shoes, it’s so refreshing to see a unique and bespoke solution that really does draw the eye downwards!

PARIS IN DUBAI: Pierre Corthay shoes for men

Last Wednesday Pierre Corthay, the Parisian specialist in fine luxury bespoke shoes for men, landed in Dubai for the first time and couldn’t believe it was raining. He finds Dubai amazing in its size and scale.

The Event that took place in Andrew Martin showroom in DIFC, was an exclusive showcasing of Pierre Corthay’s made to measure and ready to wear collection of unique men’s shoes and his way of introducing himself to Dubai customers.
I had a great pleasure to be there, take pictures for you and chat with maestro himself.

shoeRA: After the ‘teaser’ presentation tonight, is the shop opening in Dubai your next big step?

Pierre Corthay: Yes. We are doing the same in Asia – Singapore and Korea. We came to market not just to make a presentation; we have a full set for try fitting and taking orders also. Our target is to open a shop and we are looking different locations now.
shoeRA: Dubai Mall perhaps?
Pierre Corthay: No, Dubai Mall is amazing, but we are looking for something more like a hotel. Emirates Towers for example.

shoeRA: Apart from ready to wear collection, will you offer custom design to Dubai customers too?

Pierre Corthay: Yes, we will be taking orders; shoes will be made in our Paris studio and shipped back to Dubai.

shoeRA: How long will it take from the moment of order to delivery?

Pierre Corthay: We have three different ranges – pure bespoke, 100% handmade which takes around five months for the first time customer; it takes time to find the perfect fitting, style and balance. For reordering the time is around two months and a half since we already have a mold. For ready the wear there’s no waiting time, we have them in stock. But if you want, we can twist something, for example leather, color, lining etc. That takes around two months.

shoeRA: How would you explain the process of bespoke shoe making in few basic steps?

Pierre Corthay: First step is to take the measurement and make a wood mold. Making the mold takes both technical skill and intuition what the man really wants. Then we design the model on the ‘last’ and make the try fitting. This is a leather model, 99% exact fitting of the final shoes. After the try fitting, we modify the ‘last’ where needed and then we proceed to final process – we make the upper, the lasting, the finishing etc.

shoeRA: Have you ever received an order from Dubai or Middle East and what your expectations are?

Pierre Corthay: I’ve never had orders from Dubai, but I made shoes for Lebanese men in Paris. They have very good taste for style and tradition in suits tailoring too. My feeling is that Dubai will be huge success as men here are extremely refined, they take care of their looks, beard, nails. So if you are making so much attention to this kind of detail, it will work for sure.

shoeRA: Have you ever received an order that wasn’t in line with your style and aesthetics? How do you deal with that?

Pierre Corthay: Yes, I’ve been in situation like that and I always try to advise the Client because I know what is the best for them. Fifteen years ago or more I had a very tall and heavy Client who insisted and insisted and finally I made him a pair of very sharp shoes. Of course we both were unhappy. From that day I promised I’ll never make a compromise again. Not long ago, I was in exactly the same situation again, but I said “I’ll make a pair of shoes that will suit you and if you don’t like them, it’s on me, just let me do it”. I made him a pair of shoes and after few months I met him and he sad they were perfect.
You know, the elegance is a good balance between your physical envelope and what you put on that envelope.

shoeRA: Your inspiration comes from cars, yachts, plains… what’s your favorite car?

Pierre Corthay: I have a lot favorite cars, but mostly old cars, for example Aston Martin. I love Volkswagen Karmann from 60’s – design is like a sculpture, incredible. Old cars are designed old-fashioned way, on the paper, not like today – computers are designing cars.
shoeRA: Which car do you drive?
Pierre Corthay: Old Saab
shoeRA: 9000 Turbo?
Pierre Corthay: Exactly!! How did you know?!

shoeRA: Why not design shoes for women?

Pierre Corthay: It is much more difficult to work with women! It all starts with a dream and ends up as a nightmare! (Laughs loudly)

Pierre Corthay store will open in Dubai after summer and shoe prices start from AED4,000 (€850).

Special thanks to Natalye and Jana from Platform 67.

FRESH: Heyday Footwear

heyday 4 Heyday Footwear

Heyday footwear
has been a brand that’s been out there for a good three, almost four years now; and has been out for retail on different sneaker websites. Heyday is finally getting some well deserved publicity for their new look this season. The pictures featured here (especially the high-top, white leathers), remind me of a pair of high-top Kris Van Assche sneakers for S/S 2010.
